Harry Maguire praises Erik ten Hag for something that could save his Manchester United job

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has praised Erik ten Hag for giving young players opportunities, a trait which should bode well in any decision on his future.

United drew 1-1 with Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday and they were fortunate to get a point from the game, despite taking the lead in the sixth minute of added time.

Mason Mount thought his goal had won it, but Brentford scored a deserved equaliser just moments later, which meant that although Thomas Frank's side were dominant, recording 31 attempts on goal and hitting the woodwork on four occasions, the points were shared.

Maguire replaced Raphael Varane, who was substituted with a knock, at half-time and he came on to make his 200th appearance for the club, which was moot given the performance.

However, Maguire sat down with club media in preparation for reaching that milestone, and he discussed his favourite memories and praised Ten Hag.

"Playing in the Manchester derby, the one at Old Trafford before Covid was an unbelievable atmosphere," Maguire said when asked about his highlights.

"Probably one of the best I’ve played in, where Scotty scores in the last minute. Obviously, lifting the Carabao Cup as well was a huge moment for me. This club demands winning trophies.

"We got beaten in a Europa League final under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] in a penalty shootout, which was tough to take. But to [win a trophy] in Erik's first season was really impressive. The lads did a great job and thoroughly deserved a trophy.
