Harry Maguire announces he is no longer captain of Manchester United

Harry Maguire is no longer Manchester United captain.

Maguire confirmed the news in a statement on Twitter on Sunday afternoon in which he announced Erik ten Hag has taken the decision to change skippers ahead of the new season. The United defender wrote: "After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain.

"He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt. So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband.

"Since the day I took on the role, three and half years ago, it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date. Maguire was named captain within six months of joining the club in an £80million move from Leicester City upon Ashley Young's departure for Inter. However, the centre-back lost his place in the first team after just two games last season after a poor start.

The 30-year-old would make just 16 starts in all competitions, half of which came in cups, and even slipped behind left-back Luke Shaw in the pecking
