Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford in England squad with Manchester United teammate omitted

Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford have been named in the latest England squad, but there is no place for their fit-again Manchester United teammate Mason Mount.

Maguire and Rashford have been selected for matches against Australia and Italy this month. However, despite a return to action for United in the last three games - following his early-season injury setback - £60million summer signing Mount has been omitted on this occasion.

The former Chelsea midfielder will, instead, remain at Carrington to prepare for upcoming United games. England, similarly to United, are still without first-choice left-back Luke Shaw through injury.

Interestingly, there is a place in the squad for Manchester City defender John Stones. He has not played a minute for the treble-winners this season.

Mount, 24, has won 36 caps for the England national team, scoring five goals with as many assists since his debut back in 2019. He has been a regular feature under Southgate, as well, representing his country at the delayed Euro 2020 championships and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar last winter.

His most recent appearance for the Three Lions came in the agonising quarter-final defeat to France in December last year. Mount started twice at that World Cup.

England take on Australia in a friendly match on Friday, October 13, before continuing Euro 2024 qualifying against Italy on Tuesday, October 17. Both games will be held at Wembley Stadium with 7.45pm kick-offs.

Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Lewis Dunk, Marc Guehi, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Fikayo
