Harry Kane refuses to rule out move into professional golf after retirement from football

England captain Harry Kane has said he is open to the idea of becoming a professional golfer once he eventually retires from football.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker has been a keen amateur golfer since childhood and will take part in the Icons Series in New Jersey later this month, after playing England’s final Nations League fixture against Hungary on Tuesday night.

Kane has a scratch handicap and will compete in the Ryder Cup-style tournament alongside other footballing greats including Liverpool midfielder James Milner and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, as well as other sports stars like cricketers Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting, as well Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and boxer Canelo Alvarez.

The 28-year-old, who at 50 goals is just three behind Wayne Rooney’s all-time England record, was keen to playdown his ability in comparison with professionals but refused to rule out the dramatic career change at some stage in the future.

‘I guess the ideal career would be a World Cup, a Super Bowl, and maybe a Masters green jacket,’ Kane joked ahead of the event.

‘I think that’s a long way away — but never say never,’ he added. ‘I’m way off where the pros are at the moment, I know that for sure. I’m just concentrating on football. Golf is a great hobby to have to get away from football.’
