Hapless Harry Maguire lends Scotland a hand but Andy Robertson gifts England with rare mishap – 5 talking points

Scotland were put to the sword by England 3-1 at Hampden in the SFA’s 150th anniversary clash.

Steve Clarke’s in-form side were given a dose of reality by the Auld Enemy who were comfortable winners. Goals from Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane saw off the Scots whose only response was a Harry Maguire OG. Scotland are well on course to qualify for the Euro 2024 Finals in Germany next summer after winning their first five qualifying games.

But they were outclassed for long spells by Gareth Southgate’s side who could have won by a bigger margin. The visitors started strongly and scored twice in two minutes just after the half hour mark. Kyle Walker fizzed a cross into the six-yard box which was stabbed home by his Manchester City team-mate Foden to make it 1-0.

Scotland had barely recovered from that set-back before they were further behind - after a horrible error from skipper Andy Robertson. He gifted Bellingham a pass inside his own box and the Real Madrid star slotted home. After the break, Clarke’s side improved and got the Hampden crowd excited when Robertson’s cross was knocked into his own net by Maguire.

But the English stepped up a gear again and skipper Kane secured the victory late on after being slipped in by the superb Bellingham.

We might not like to admit it in Scotland but the Auld Enemy are now among Europe’s elite - and they showed it last night.

Gareth Southgate’s side haven’t won a major tournament yet but they’ve gone close and with this squad of players it’s almost inevitable now.

The strength and depth England’s manager has at his disposal is frightening.

Just look at their Hampden bench. Ben Chilwell, Bukayo Saka, James Maddison, to name just three.
