Hamilton, Verstappen, Schumacher, Vettel, Alonso: F1 drivers who have led most laps
Last weekend saw the Dutch Grand Prix take place from Zandvoort as runaway championship leader Max Verstappen looked to extend his lead and edge ever closer to an inevitable second consecutive title.
After qualifying on pole position, many assumed it would be another procession for Verstappen, just like in Belgium the previous week.
However, it was to be far from easy this week, and the defending champion would have to work extremely hard for his win which he eventually got ahead of George Russell and Charles Leclerc in second and third respectively.
A late Safety Car saw Lewis Hamilton leading the race, before a strategy decision from Mercedes saw the race slip away from the joint most successful driver in Formula One, who ended up finishing fourth.
Unsurprisingly, Verstappen has by far led the most laps this season, and because of how dominant he has been, now sits 10th on most laps led in the sport, overtaking his girlfriend’s father Nelson Piquet in the process. That’s an awkward chat to have around the dinner table, isn’t it?
Verstappen currently has led 1,636 laps in Formula One, and if he carries on his dominant season, could potentially advance further up the list before the end of the season.
Top of the list currently sits Hamilton with 5,423 laps led, a record that will stay his for a while, but with the seven-time world champion seemingly in decline, it appears in the next few years that Verstappen will be getting ever closer to that total.
The top 10 also includes two other drivers that are on the current grid, with four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in third with 3,499 laps led.
Vettel has announced he will be retiring at the end of the season, however, so it seems unlikely he will get over the 3,500
