Anthony Joshua's trainer still thinks he would beat Oleksandr Usyk in a trilogy fight

Anthony Joshua‘s trainer Angel Fernandez has claimed that he would beat Oleksandr Usyk in a trilogy bout despite losing their previous two fights.

Joshua lost to Usyk via split decision in August.

The British superstar’s reign as unified heavyweight world champion came to an end at the hands of the undefeated Ukrainian last September at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Joshua, 32, suffered a second consecutive defeat to the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, which saw him fall agonisingly short in his bid to win back his world title belts in Saudi Arabia last month in the process.

Fernandez was disappointed to see AJ lose again but firmly believes he can get the better of Usyk the third time around if they meet again in the future.

“Of course, I mean compared to the first time, the second time I think he’s started to become a lot more comfortable fighting southpaws, what Usyk brings,” he told iD Boxing.

“He started to understand him. Defensively he was much better. A lot of the shots that he was taking in the first fight he was not taking them shots in the second fight.

“So it was a lot of work on defence. People think sometimes us coaches create magic. We don’t create magic. There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes.

“I do believe – and he knows that himself as well – if you watch the fight again he could have done a bit more and that bit more I think would have given us the win.”

Unlike many others, Fernandez firmly believes Joshua is more than capable of avenging his third professional loss.

He added: “The reflections is again you know disappointing.
