Hamilton Accies v Ayr Utd: Accies boss John Rankin doesn't care how his side wins, as long as they do

John Rankin doesn’t care how Hamilton Accies beat Ayr United today – just as long as they do.

The Accies boss says three points are massive at “the business end of the season”, and while Rankin insists he doesn’t look at the Championship table, he knows where a win could take his side.

But Rankin says his players aren’t looking for a win to put themselves in the frame for the SPFL Trust Trophy final against Raith Rovers the following weekend, they're just seeking points, and all talk of that game is still banned.

Accies have yet to beat Lee Bullen’s side this season, with a 2-2 draw at Somerset Park in August, and a 1-0 defeat at the same venue in January.

On Ayr’s last visit to New Douglas Park they ran out 3-2 winners, with a Jean-Pierre Tiehi ‘goal’ over-ruled, despite seemingly overwhelming evidence that it had crossed the line.

“At times this season we’ve played some good stuff and been on the wrong end of the result,” said Rankin.

“We’re going into Saturday looking to win it. We’re looking to get away from the break that we’ve had, and to get back to winning ways.

“Our plans and preparations are in place for us to do that on Saturday.”

Rankin has been on Scottish Cup spying missions and took in Rangers’ 3-0 Ibrox win over Raith Rovers on Saturday before watching Ayr lose 2-1 at Falkirk on Monday.
