Hamilton Accies boss targets a striker but is pleased with signings so far

John Rankin says he’s working hard to boost Hamilton Accies’ fire-power this summer, but competition for places is already fierce in pre-season training.

Rankin’s side returned to the Championship after a single season in League One, and have designs on progressing back to the Premiership.

To that end they’ve brought in goalkeeper Charlie Albinson and defender Sean McGinty from Ayr United, midfielder Barry Maguire from Motherwell, and ex-Livingston winger Steven Bradley, with Rankin eying more captures.

He told the Advertiser : “I’m delighted with what we’ve got in so far.

“Charlie brings in great quality in goals, Sean McGinty is very tried and tested at this level, brings a great deal of experience and leadership.

“We tried to get Barry before, didn’t quite get there, and this summer the opportunity came again to get him in the building.

“He brings quality and experience not only in the Championship, but the Premiership as well.

“Steven Bradley brings that quality, so I’m delighted with that, and we’re still trying to add to it.

“I think we need competition for all places, which we have, but we lack numbers at the top end of the pitch, and that’s what we’ll be trying to address over the next couple of months.

“But I think we all know that we’ve only got a couple of recognised strikers.

“We need to add to that and we’re working hard behind the scenes, but these things take time.”

Rankin added: “There are lots of players like new signings.

“We’ve got Cian Newbury coming back from loan, Fergus Owens was out for the last wee bit of the season, there are lots of players that are going to come back like new signings, and hopefully that’s what everybody does.
