Hamilton Accies boss not finished in transfer market despite double signing

Hamilton Accies hinted that he’s not finished building his squad and might bring in “a couple more” despite taking his signings to 12 in the last 24 hours.

Former Ayr United defender Mikey Hewitt (22) and ex-Watford and Salford City youth central defender Josh O'Brien (20) have signed deals in the last 24 hours, with both climbing off the bench in today’s 1-0 League One win over Cove Rangers.

When asked if that was him done for now, Rankin said: “No. I would expect maybe a couple more.

“We work tirelessly to try and bring players in, and our recruitment so far has been good. We need to continue to do that.

“The way we are just now, if we stand still we encourage others to progress, so I think we need to be proactive and continue to see what is out there.

“If it’s a player that can strengthen our squad and come in and help us, then it makes a difference.

“I see the players today, they turn up and there are two new shirts in the dressing room and the lift it gives them – ‘I need to go and show my peers how good I am’.

“If we can do that, it certainly makes a difference to the team.”

On his new faces, Rankin said: “We brought Mikey Hewitt in yesterday, that’s been in the pipeline.

“I think he brings good energy and enthusiasm, he brings a threat and can play in a number of positions – that versatility is important.

“That was always going to be one that we would push over the line if we could.

“Josh O’Brien, we had been speaking to him for various parts of pre-season and he was close to a deal in Ireland through the week, but he actually flew in this morning.

“He’s a good size, a good stature, he’s had a decent upbringing over in America, then coming back and being at Watford and last season at Salford.
