GTA V: Take-Two confirms 2013 release has passed 165 million sales

Grand Theft Auto 5 is continuing to sell at an absolutely ridiculous level, Take-Two have confirmed.

The publisher of the game has now revealed that the sales of the new current-generation version, on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, have “exceeded expectations”, per GamesIndustry.biz.

In fact, the new uptick in sales means that the game’s total sales now sit at 165 million units. That’s since 2013, of course, when the game first hit shelves.

Per the aforementioned report, the new generation port of GTA has sold five million copies, or there abouts, since hitting stores in March.

That’s five million sales in two months.

It’s absolutely crazy to think that a game that is now nine years old is continuing to sell at such a pace, but this just goes to show what a juggernaut of a product GTA is.

It is perhaps partly explained, too, by the fact that there is a very cheap way of upgrading your copy of GTA V from PS4 to PS5.

As per PushSquare, if you own the PS4 version of the game, you’ll only need to pay £8.75 to download the single player portion of GTA V on PS5 until 14th June 2022. GTA Online, by comparison, is free.

After the 22nd of June, though, the price will change and it will be £34.99 to buy both the single player and the multiplayer as a bundle.

That will probably go some way to explaining exactly why GTA is performing so well, given the bargain cost of buying the game.

Elsewhere, Take-Two has confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold another one million copies, taking it to 44 million copies sold overall.

That would be mightily impressive usually, but it’s a minnow when compared to the absolute whale that GTA V has proved to be.

Also, 2K has confirmed that WWE 2K22 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands have sold well, too,
