Green River tunnel crash and explosion sees multiple people feared dead in Wyoming
At least two individuals are feared dead following a horrific collision and subsequent explosion in a Wyoming tunnel. The "ugly" Green River incident saw multiple vehicles, including a tractor, collide in the tunnel leading to an intense "raging" blast after an involved tractor trailer carrying transformers was caught up in the accident.
Authorities remain on edge as the integrity of the tunnel structure is compromised, with fears it could collapse at any moment. Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jason Mower said to the Cowboy State Daily: "We are containing the scene now because there's nothing else we can do, given the conditions inside the tunnel. Both the nature of the fire and now the structural integrity inside the tunnel itself."
A rescue operation is underway with difficulty due to the perilous situation; seven people have been taken to hospital and efforts continue amidst the chaos.
Emergency services initially found it challenging to access the westbound side of Interstate 80 where the tragedy unfolded approximately at midday local time. Mower explained the approach authorities are taking, saying: "Basically, we treat it as a giant crime scene."
Images emerging from the scene display plumes of black smoke pouring from the congested passageway beneath the mountainous area near Green River, with several lorries visible amongst the wreckage, reports the Mirror.
State Senator John Kolb has warned that a tunnel is on the brink of collapse, stating: "It's going to be pretty devastating for the area, most importantly for those folks that lost their lives."
