Greater Manchester weather forecast after torrential rain batters region

Sporadic showers are expected to hit Greater Manchester throughout the week after torrential downpours battered the region on Sunday and led to flood warnings, according to the Met Office.

Flood warnings remained in force on Monday, including on the upper River Douglas area north of Wigan, with Environment Agency flood 'alerts' also in place in the region.

They surround the River Irwell in Manchester and Salford, as well as Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall; the middle River Mersey area including Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston; the River Bollin catchment area and around stretches of the River Douglas.

The Met Office has forecasted more rain, but downpours of Sunday's scale are unlikely.

Monday is said to be largely dry with sunny spells and the odd shower.

The Met Office said: "Rain clearing the far south will leave a drier and fresher start. Sunny spells but with some showers by afternoon, these mainly focused towards the east. Feeling cooler but still pleasant in any sunshine."

Maximum temperatures, meanwhile, are expected to reach 19C. The Met Office predicted dry conditions overnight, with clear spells and light winds allowing temperatures to drop.

A 'chilly but bright start' is forecast for Tuesday, with sunny spells and scattered showers developing.

"These mainly in the east where they could turn locally heavy and perhaps thundery. Feeling rather cool," said the Met Office.

The outlook for Wednesday to Friday is described as unsettled with outbreaks of rain, sunny spells and showers.
