Greater Manchester residents told to leave their homes and 'find alternative accommodation' just days before Christmas

Scores of residents in a city centre block were told to leave their homes after a power-cut earlier this week.

Residents living in the Atrium block of the Nuovo development on Great Ancoats Street were told to find alternative accommodation on Tuesday night (December 19) ‘for the next 48 hours’, which would be reimbursed by building management Urban Bubble. As of Thursday (December 21), the issue has been fixed, the Evening News understands.

The notice to go elsewhere came after days of attempted fixes, one resident said. Lidia, who did not give her surname, told the M.E.N. that she first reported the problem on Sunday (December 17), and management dispatched an electrician.

However, he arrived at the block ‘thinking it was just one flat, but it was 100 flats’, Lidia said. “Then he tried to ask for the code to get into a key safe to get into the [where the system can be reset].

“They gave him three codes, and none of them worked. He then asked for authorisation to break the box open, and they said no.”

Lidia said over the next few hours, there was ‘no communication’ from property managers, until Monday (December 18), when residents were told there would be a planned power cut to explore the issue. On Tuesday (December 19), a four-hour outage was planned to restore electricity.

However that did not work, prompting Urban Bubble to tell residents to find somewhere else to stay. In a further update, it’s thought the company said it ‘believed’ supply would come back on Thursday afternoon.
