the agency has now issued a new yellow warning for ice which comes into force at 5pm tonight. It warns that 'icy patches are likely to develop this evening and overnight leading to difficult travel conditions.'

They say untreated roads and paths will be particularly hazardous. The warning comes as snow and ice continues to cause chaos in parts of Cumbria.

Up to 12 inches of snow fell in parts of the county last night. At least 200 motorists are said to have got stuck on roads in the South Lakes.

The fuel pumps ran dry at Tebay services on the M6 with many people abandoning their vehicles as they sought refuge from bitterly cold conditions.

There remains no fuel on the northbound side of Tebay this morning with several roads still rendered impassible Workers and locals have been out with shovels this morning beginning the task of clearing the snow.

Cumbria Police have declared a major incident and urged motorists to only travel 'if necessary.' They have also told those outside not to travel to the county, Lancs Live reports.

Rossendale in east Lancashire is one of the places near Greater Manchester that has woken to heavy snowfall, parts of GM having light dustings.
