Graham Potter lifts lid on Leandro Trossard's contract situation after Newcastle United links

Graham Potter has confirmed that Leandro Trossard's contract at Brighton does not expire next summer.

The Belgium international joined Albion in the summer of 2019 for a fee in the region of £15million from Genk and since then he has scored 19 goals and bagged 11 assists in 107 appearances in all competitions.

After scoring 10 goals in his first two seasons with the Seagulls, the 27-year-old found the net eight times last term and he appears to be going from strength to strength in 2022/23. Trossard got on the scoresheet in the 2-0 win at West Ham on Sunday and showed his quality in the wing-back role, a somewhat unfamiliar position for him.

As he continues to impress, that may lead rival clubs to pursue the versatile Belgian. According to reports, Manchester United and Newcastle United have had an eye on him this summer.

He signed a four-year deal with Brighton when he joined them more than three years ago but it would appear he has an option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.

When asked if Trossard had been offered a new contract on Sunday as he was supposedly in the final year of his current deal, Potter replied: "It's not a year, it's more than that."

On his display against the Hammers, he added: "He was at a strong level last year, in fairness, if you see his goal record and what he gave us. He is playing a role that has a lot of responsibility, I think.

"He defends for the team when he has to and contributes to our play generally and obviously he is a forward, an attacking player, so to assist and to score is important for him and us. It was nice that he did that and I thought he was really good."
