Graeme Souness reveals the Rangers transfer that is a 'mystery' to him as icon stunned by Ibrox coup

Graeme Souness has branded Jack Butland the 'complete goalkeeper' as he admitted he can't quite believe he is starring for Rangers.

The former Crystal Palace goalkeeper - who spent time on loan at Manchester United last season - left the English Premier League for a move north of the border on a free transfer. Former boss Michael Beale handed him a four-year deal and the rest is history. He's only been in Glasgow for six months but he's already established himself as a firm fans' favourite. Whether it has been domestically or in Europe, the England cap has stepped up with some massive saves for his side - much like club hero Allan McGregor back in his day.

Philippe Clement is now in charge at Ibrox and he has been delighted with the No1 he has inherited. The Rangers faithful will be desperate for Butland to be plying his trade in Govan for many more years to come but it is the fact they landed him in the first place that has left Souness surprised at just how they manage to pull off the coup.

Speaking with Jim White and Simon Jordan on talkSPORT, he explained: “How they’ve got Jack Butland, it’s a mystery to me. I’ve been up there several times and and watched him this year, I watched the Old Firm game. He looks like the complete goalkeeper.

“He’s got great presence, the modern keeper has to be able to deal with the ball at his feet, he’s got that, lovely kicker of the ball. He just looks like an all-round really, really good goalkeeper.

“I look at him thinking at 30 years old which as a goalkeeper, you’re entering your best years, and I’m thinking ‘How have Rangers got him’ because he is a really, really top goalkeeper. Then you've got the Man United story where they've got De Gea, Henderson and Butland. He never played
