Graeme Souness 'mystified' at Philippe Clement's new Rangers deal as he spots something missing from Ibrox board

Graeme Souness fears Rangers are missing someone with football expertise on the Ibrox board - as he pleaded for Philippe Clement to be given more help in the bid to close the gap to Celtic which he again claimed is NOT that big.

The legendary Light Blues figure helped out in the process of the appointment of Clement last year and still reckons he is the right man for the job. But Souness confessed his disappointment that he hasn’t been backed more this summer as the clock ticks down on the transfer window and as a result was puzzled at the Belgian signing a contract extension.

Rangers haven’t replaced chief executive James Bisgrove since he left for the Saudi Pro League as chairman John Bennett takes on that role and Souness admitted he fears there aren’t enough people in the boardroom with football experience. The 71-year-old, who held talks with Bisgrove over a possible return to the club, told talkSPORT: “My concern - and this isn’t me touting for a job, trust me that ship has sailed - I worry about where the football knowledge of the board is. I’d say this to their face if they were sitting here.

“I was part of the recruitment process for the new manager and met the people who are running the football club and I just felt ‘Who do they ask a question?’ I think Philippe Clement is a good manager and given the right support he will do well.

“I’m hoping they listen to the manager because I didn’t meet anyone with any history in the professional game. John Greig is there but he doesn’t have any sway and wouldn’t want any sway. He’s an old boy now and he’s still very much got his marbles but I don’t think he would involved in that and I don’t see who they are leaning on for football knowledge.
