Graeme Souness identifies Ralf Rangnick's biggest problem at Manchester United in worrying claim

Graeme Souness says Manchester United are "absent of confidence" as their woes in front of goal continued against Southampton.

The Reds looked dangerous against the Saints, as they did against Burnley in midweek but their efforts in the opposition third could only bring a goal in each game with Cristiano Ronaldo going another game without seeing the net bulge.

Their barren run comes at an important stage of the season with the matches coming thick and fast as the race for the top four heats up.

Souness was baffled by the lack of goals in recent games but admitted they are still dangerous.

He told Sky Sports: "Scoring goals is the hardest thing and they have so many strikers, you'd think they can get that mix right in terms of what they have got upfront to create chances and score goals.

"They've got far more goals in them than anyone else, and that's what makes them dangerous, but they are really struggling for any continuity ... confidence is a big thing and they seem absent of confidence, real belief and a system that works for them.

"The manager has got a difficult job because he has so many options!"

United welcome Brighton to Old Trafford on Monday before they travel to Leeds United on Sunday but for Ralf Rangnick there will be mounting concerns surrounding the chasing pack looking to break into the top four at their expense.
