Government respond to petition to replay Nottingham Forest vs Huddersfield play-off final

The Government has provided an explanation as to why a petition to get Nottingham Forest's Championship play-off final against Huddersfield Town replayed has been rejected.

Forest won promotion to the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town at Wembley in the play-off final on May 29. Steve Cooper's side booked their place in the top-flight for the first time in 23 years thanks to Levi Colwill's own-goal right before half-time.

The game was not without controversy, however, as referee Jon Moss - in his final game as an official before retiring - waved away two penalty calls from the Yorkshire side.

First Harry Toffolo was booked for simulation when he went down under pressure from Forest defender Jack Colback. Moss' decision was reviewed by VAR but not over-ruled. Moments later, Lewis O'Brien fell to the ground from a tackle by Max Lowe. This incident was not reviewed by VAR as Forest escaped punishment.

The pair of incidents left Huddersfield Town fans infuriated as they felt they had been denied two clear-cut penalties.

A petition submitted to the Government on May 31 was rejected. Explaining why the petition was rejected, the Parliament UK website said: "It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for. We can only accept petitions about things the Government or Parliament are directly responsible for.

"Decisions about sporting events are a matter for their organisers, not the UK Government or Parliament. We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards."
