Govenment issues update ahead of Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic & Stockport games next weekend

Government advice for next weekend's football matches is poised to remain the same and thus gives the English Football League (EFL) chance to stage games.

Games across the football pyramid this weekend were called off including in the Premier League and EFL as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. However, other sports such as both codes of rugby, cricket and horse racing are continuing to varying degrees with various tributes taking place.

The game's authorities have come under fire for cancelling matches even as far as down to grassrooots level. Football has been the only sport in the UK to be postponed on a widespread level and other aspects of entertainment have continued.

It meant Bolton Wanderers' trip to Cheltenham Town in League One, Wigan Athletic vs Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, as well as the League Two clashes of Tranmere Rovers vs Stockport County and Rochdale hosting Salford City will all need to be rearranged. Matches are poised to resume in midweek.

There has been speculation that next weekend's fixtures could also fall by the wayside, with the funeral potentially taking place on Monday, September 19. That could put the Metropolitan Police under considerable pressure, with the possibility of drafting in extra resources from around the country to deal with the crowds expected in the capital.

However, a Met Police statement to football.london said: "Whether matches go ahead is a matter for the football authorities. If fixtures do take place, the Met will work with the relevant partners and ensure that appropriate policing plans are in place."
