GoCardless Kent Junior A Cup Final: Smeeth & Brabourne 4 FC Greenwich 3
Smeeth & Brabourne came from behind to win a seven-goal thriller against FC Greenwich in the GoCardless Kent Junior A Cup final.
They trailed to an early Tommy Gaish free-kick which found its way in but Jamie Finlayson levelled from a corner and player-of-the-match Matthew Hambrook gave them a 2-1 half-time lead.
A frantic start to the second half produced four goals in 14 minutes - great entertainment for followers of both sides at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium.
Michael Wills made it 3-1 and while Enver Emin replied, a penalty from captain Jack Price quickly restored Smeeth’s two-goal cushion.
Back came FC Greenwich, with Jordan Dapaah adding their third, but they couldn’t find an equaliser as Smeeth & Brabourne, who had left-back Ethan Miller sent off in the closing minutes, won their first County Cup.
“This whole season has been the best thing ever and this game was unbelievable,” said manager James Wilmer.
“I haven’t got the words to describe how good I feel right now.
“Full credit to the boys. They work so hard each and every game.
“As much as I can motivate them, they motivate themselves. They’ve wanted this so much for the whole season, and I’m so proud of them.
“Credit to Greenwich, too. They fought back and God knows how many times they hit the post.
“Both teams worked so hard but we got over the line and that’s what matters.
“This is the first Kent Cup Smeeth have ever won and to do it in the A Cup, there’s no better feeling.”
FC Greenwich made a fast start with Miller twice coming to Smeeth’s rescue, including a goal-saving tackle after Harry Rothwell squared for Emin.
The Whites’ early pressure was rewarded with a 12th-minute opener after Price’s challenge on Matthew Codd led to a free-kick out wide on
