GMP officer attacked man in mosque kitchen over WhatsApp 'disagreement'

A serving Greater Manchester Police officer has been sacked after he launched an 'unprovoked' attack on a man in the kitchen of a mosque over a 'disagreement on WhatsApp'.

PC Muhammed Moosa was given a conditional caution in July 2023 over the assault, police said. He had 'assaulted in a man in the kitchen of a mosque by grabbing him by the neck'.

The incident followed a 'disagreement' on chat platform WhatsApp, police added. PC Moosa was not on the duty at the time but was a serving officer in the Bolton area.

On Tuesday (April 9), he was dismissed at a misconduct hearing at the force headquarters. The hearing was told how he 'deliberately sought out the victim' in the 'unprovoked attack'.

But PC Moosa was said to have been 'remorseful' after the incident. Chief Constable Stephen Watson, who presided over the hearing, said: "Culpability in this case is high and the officer’s actions deliberate, unforced and unlawful.

"PC Moosa deliberately sought out the victim, forcing an altercation resulting in an unprovoked assault. The assault was clearly out of character and to his credit, PC Moosa admitted the offence, and his regret and remorse is genuine.

"“However, the purpose of these proceedings is to preserve public confidence in the police service and police officers can’t commit criminal offences."

PC Moosa, who had been on restricted duties since March 2023, accepted his behaviour amounted to gross misconduct. He has now been dismissed from the force and his name will also be added to the College of Policing Barred List.
