Giorgos Giakoumakis sees £5m bid turfed out as Celtic hero targeted to makes waves in Mexico

Cruz Azul have had a concrete bid for former Celtic star Giorgos Giakoumakis booted out by Atlanta United, according to a report.

The Greece international - who spent just 18 months in Glasgow - made the move to the MLS in February last year and hit the ground running with a stunning debut campaign that delivered 17 regular season goals and a further two in the MLS playoffs. He's followed in a similar vein of form this campaign with five strikes already to his name from just eight games and he's also popped up with three assists.

The Athletic report that Cruz Azul have had an initial verbal offer in excess of £4.75million {$6m] booted out but they remain keen on the former Celtic man and are likely try to continue talks and come back to the table. The 29-year-old was signed by now Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou when he was in the hot seat at Parkhead, but he played second fiddle to Kyogo Furuhashi and ended up taking the switch to the USA.

The same report states his current employers have NO interest in losing the hitman with talks over a new deal underway - but no real progress has been made at this stage. The hitman has previously turned out for the likes of VVV-Venlo and AEK Athens in his career.
