Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth pictured at England’s World Cup match against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium
Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth was among the lucky England fans to witness a memorable victory in Mexico.
Cheered on by around 3,000 supporters at the Azteca, in a crowd of more than 80,000, England produced a superb display to win 3-2 and book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Gills boss Ainsworth was spotted in and around the stadium by England fans, who shared selfies with him on social media.
Ainsworth is a recognisable figure in the English game and, even without his trademark unbuttoned shirt, was easily identifiable as he did his best to avoid the rain, wearing a mac.
England’s last-16 game in Mexico was delayed an hour because of a thunder storm.
The Gills boss has followed the lead of the club's US owner, Brad Galinson, who has also been sharing pictures of himself attending England matches and cheering on the Three Lions from his home country.
Ainsworth was in Mexico City to watch as Thomas Tuchel's England side battled to victory with 10 men, thanks to a Jude Bellingham double, a Harry Kane penalty, a string of fine saves from Jordan Pickford and a determined effort.
The Gills boss recently admitted the first few days of pre-season back home would largely be overseen by the club's sports science staff, although it won't be long before his side return to action.
Gillingham begin their pre-season campaign away to Dover Athletic on Tuesday, July 14.
Ainsworth has had a busy summer, in between taking some time off, with seven new signings arriving so far and more expected before the start of the season.
