Gillingham goalkeeper Ollie Wright’s reaction to a goalless draw against Newport County in League Two
Goalkeeper Ollie Wright insists Gillingham responded well on Saturday after a heavy defeat at York the week before.
The Gills were held to a goalless draw by Newport at Priestfield after suffering a 3-0 defeat at York City in their previous match.
Wright helped the Gills keep a clean sheet and felt the response from the team was important after their performance at York.
“I think we had a positive reaction from last week,” he said. “That was the main thing, to show the fans.
“Last week wasn't good, so putting it right was key. I think we did. The only thing we were lacking was a goal.”
It was Gillingham's third successive clean sheet at Priestfield, following home wins over Bristol Rovers and Tranmere.
Wright was pleased with another shut-out but acknowledged the difficulty of breaking down a team which they felt was happy to defend.
He said: ”It's always nice getting a clean sheet, especially in front of the home fans.
“I think we were really good defensively. When teams come and they sit in, it's really hard to break teams down.
“We’ve just got to keep doing our thing, keep playing and the goals will come.”
Despite Newport having more attacking opportunities than the Gills - with twice as many shots - Wright was not overly concerned by what he saw from the visitors.
He said: “We were saying at half-time that the only way we're going to lose or concede is set-plays. That's what they're playing for, or a mistake. I felt we dealt with it really well, especially with the long throws.”
The goalkeeper admitted a point was not quite enough for the Gills, who felt their overall performance deserved more.
He said: “We were disappointed not to get three points because we should be beating teams at home the way we're playing. No
