George Russell calls for Mercedes to keep pushing as they continue to pick up from others' misfortune
George Russell has called on his Mercedes team to keep pushing hard as they look to earn more points on performance alone rather than from the misfortune of others.
The W13 has been a source of frustration for the team so far this year, with them unable to extract its optimal performance anywhere near as much as they would like thanks to issues like porpoising.
It is, however, a reliable car with the team able to pick up the pieces when the likes of Red Bull and, most recently, Ferrari have gone bang in front of them.
Indeed, George Russell has been the ultimate poacher of points with him on hand on more than one occasion to sweep up and bring home a good result, but he has said that Mercedes need to keep pushing and get their performance to a higher level, as they cannot keep relying on other people having problems:
“You’ve got to keep on scoring. You know, this is a championship where you’ve got the chance to score every single race.
“And it doesn’t matter how fast your car is, if you’re not scoring those points, then your tally is not going to increase.
“So, great work from everybody back at the factories to deliver a reliable car – but we can’t keep on relying on others’ misfortune, and we need to find more performance.
“That’s what everyone’s trying their hardest to achieve.”
If Mercedes can add more speed to their reliability they will have a recipe for a very good car, and they all seem to be aware of it.
The issues remain with the W13 in certain respects, though, and so there remains plenty of work to do in the coming weeks.
