British GP: George Russell recalls 'horrible' crash that saw Zhou Guanyu trapped in barriers

Mercedes driver George Russell has recalled the horrible crash at the first corner at Silverstone that saw Zhou Guanyu flip upside down and crash into the barriers at the first corner.

The British GP started at 3pm but was red-flagged seconds later as a horror crash into the first corner ended the races of George Russell, Alex Albon and Zhou Guanyu.

Indeed, a chain reaction of events saw Russell spearing across Pierre Gasly’s car and into Zhou, which sent the Chinese driver upside down and into the barriers.

Speaking to the press here at Silverstone after the crash, Russell recalled the incident and explained that he felt as though he could have been involved in the restart before the FIA had towed his car away:

“Firstly glad to see Zhou is okay, it was an incredibly scary accident for him and for those watching.

“I just got completely swamped by everybody at the start and next thing I know I was in the side of Zhou.

“I jumped out to see if he was okay but then I came back to see if the car started but it was being taken away. It’s annoying because the only issue was a puncture. The car was generally fine, a little bit of damage but nothing showstopping.

“[I have] so many different emotions.

“It was horrible, in that position he was stuck and there was nothing he could have done. We need to have a think to avoid a car being stuck in such a fine gap, there was a gap between the metal fence and the tyre barriers.”

A shocking crash, but thankfully no-one was seriously injured with Zhou checked at the medical centre and Albon airlifted to a hospital for extra precautionary checks.
