GCU Relays’ stars shine in Asaba
The best men and women athletes at the second Government College Ughelli Intercollegiate Track and Field competition, the GCU Relays, Sunday Akintan and Praise Ofoku (Victor Ludorum & Victrix Ludorum) respectively, have continued to shine at the 21st National Sports Festival, Delta 2022, with podium places in the 100m sprint events decided on Monday night at the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asaba.
In the tension soaked finals, Akintan, who competed for Yewa College, Ilaro, at the GCU Relays, finished second to eventual winner Adekalu Fakorede (Rivers State) in 10.32 seconds, while Ofoku also came a close third to winner Tima Godbless, winning the bronze at 11.57 seconds.
The fourth GCU Relays held a fortnight ago with Hussey College sweeping the stakes after shoving off the close challenge from College of Commerce, Warri.
The Victor Ludorum of the first edition, Godson Oghenebrume, has since blossomed to represent Nigeria both at the World Junior Championships and at the senior level.
Currently based in the United States of America, Oghenebrume has continued to be a worthy ambassador of the GCU Relays, as well as a credible product and an inspirational role model for all the participant of the GCU Relays.
The yearly GCU Relays, which is an initiative of the GCUOBA Worldwide, has one of its cardinal objectives as the revival of the healthy intercollegiate athletics competition among Nigerian secondary schools.
