Gary Rowett makes admission about his current situation at Millwall after recent Watford link

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has admitted that he doesn’t pay any attention to speculation linking him with other jobs and has insisted that he is looking at ways to help his current side reach new heights in the Championship next season.

A report from Football Insider earlier this month suggested that Rowett was one of a number of individuals who Watford were looking at as a possible replacement for Roy Hodgson.

However, instead of making a move for the Millwall boss, the Hornets opted to hand over the reins to Rob Edwards.

Under the guidance of Rowett, the Lions have managed to make progress in the Championship over the past two seasons.

After ending the 2020/21 campaign in 11th place in the league standings, Millwall remained in the contention for a play-off place until the final day of the previous term as they secured a ninth-place finish.

The Lions will be hoping to challenge for the play-offs again next season with Rowett at the helm.

Making reference to his current situation at Millwall, Rowett has admitted that he is focusing on ways to make the team better.

Speaking to News at Den, Rowett said: “I don’t read that sort of speculation.

“I was once told I was 1/5 for a job and I hadn’t even spoken to the club.

“It just shows you a lot of these things are generated and I think if you end up having to come out and defend yourself on a rumour that’s got no substance, you’d be doing it quite a lot.

“I’ve worked incredibly hard for three years.

“My focus is on trying to make the team better and trying to push forward and finish higher up the table.

“The rest is not really important to me.”

The Verdict

These comments from Rowett are reassuring as he is clearly committed to leading Millwall forward next season.
