Gary Neville was right about Erik ten Hag at Manchester United - but he won't be happy about it

Poor predictions are a staple of any football fan's diet - whether they admit it or not - it's just lucky that most are able to sweep them under the carpet and forget they were ever made. Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher don't enjoy such luxury.

Neville and Carragher made their pre-season predictions on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football following Tottenham's opening day draw with Leicester back in August. Erling Haaland to be top scorer was one of the few things the pair agreed on, with Neville backing Manchester United to finish in the top four and Carragher predicting they would finish in fifth.

Both are already looking extremely generous. Just seven games into the Premier League season United are 14th having taken just eight points. No team outside of the bottom three has scored fewer than United's five so far this term and three wins from 11 in all competitions is an awful return for a team that harbours ambitions of qualifying for the Champions League.

The final category the pair debated was the 'manager to watch'. Carragher plumped for new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, with Gary Neville picking three managers: Erik ten Hag, Slot and Enzo Maresca.

When asked to explain his choices, Neville said: "I can't separate them because I think there's a story with each of these three in that it's high stakes for the three of them - in different ways. Obviously Ten Hag, the end of last season with what happened with them winning the FA Cup. A lot of fans, all of us thought he would be gone, but he's there.
