Gary Neville’s call on commentary in Man United defeat at Spurs has Gary Lineker in agreement

Manchester United legend Gary Neville named Djed Spence as his player of the match during Tottenham’s 1-0 win over the Red Devils, leaving Gary Lineker in agreement.

In a Premier League fixture that largely failed to inspire between the two struggling sides, James Maddison's goal in the 13th minute clinched the win for Spurs, taking them to 12th place in the table. It was another lacklustre display from Ruben Amorim’s United, who suffered their 12th defeat in the league this season.

The United players’ poor performances meant Neville instead singled out one opposition player – Spence – as the star of the show. The 24-year-old, continuing his role as a makeshift left-back due to the club’s injury crisis, was lauded by Neville during his commentary on Sky Sports.

He said: "It isn't an easy one to choose (player of the match) but I think Djed Spence has been as good as any for Spurs at left-back. Spence on that side has stuck to his task well."

Despite being a natural right-back, the former Nottingham Forest player has been sensational since coming into Ange Postecoglou’s side, effortlessly adapting to the left flank in Destiny Udogie's absence. Having struggled in north London before this season, Spence has surged back into favour with his stellar performances, having also won the player of the match award during the side’s 2-0 Premier League win at Brentford two weeks ago.

During an episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Match of the Day presenter Lineker echoed Neville’s praise. The former Spurs striker said: “I was really impressed with Djed Spence again. I think he was quite rightly given the man of the match award by Gary Neville. He was up and down. He was good defensively. He was good on the ball."
