Gary Neville has been proven wrong with Diego Simeone to Manchester United argument
Gary Neville is never short of an opinion on Manchester United.
But despite all the criticism aimed at the former United defender, Neville tends to get things right more often than not. His staunch criticism of the United players has often seen him thrust into the position of de-facto mouthpiece for the fans.
It is true that Neville does get the occasional calls wrong. His attack on the United players for going to sporting events during the international break, which he labelled 'tone deaf', seemed archaic and potentially lost him some credibility when questioning this squad in the future. He was hypocritical at times in his assessment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position.

However, one major Neville misstep was his increasingly bizarre call for Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone to be considered as the next manager at United. Speaking following his old side's defeat to Simeone's men in the Champions League, Neville said: "Diego Simeone should be a candidate, but it’s never been achievable to get him out of Atletico Madrid.
"He is wedded in there, he is tied. But it would be brilliant to see him in the Premier League. I’ve seen it many times – I got beaten 2-0 in Valencia by his brilliant Atletico Madrid team that Griezmann was in before he went to Barcelona.
"Fantastic coach, brutal in how he approaches the game, I think in every single way. He’s tough, and Manchester United need a tough manager.
"Manchester United need a manager who can compete with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola – they’re the best, so they need someone who can stand on that touchline and feel equal to them and I think Simeone could."
