Gary Neville explains his surprise at Manchester United's current position

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes his old club's top-four prospects are over following Saturday's forgettable 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Everton at Goodison Park, insisting they have emerged from the most recent international break in a far worse state than he imagined.

Anthony Gordon's deflected effort shortly before the half-hour mark was enough to clinch all three points for the Toffees to significantly boost their survival hopes and inflict a new low on United's season. The Reds have now won just one of their last five Premier League matches and are six points shy of the top four.

Tottenham Hotspur opened up a six-point lead on United with a thumping 4-0 win over Aston Villa a few hours later, meaning they are now in the driving seat to clinch the final Champions League berth. Antonio Conte's side have capitalised on United's, Arsenal's and West Ham United's faltering from in recent weeks to move into fourth spot, following a run of four successive victories, which have seen them net 14 goals.

Spurs are now the overwhelming favourites to join the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in securing a Champions League berth next season. But whilst Neville has accepted that, he insists United have come out of the most recent international break even worse than he expected.

Neville told Sky Sports: "There is still a lot to play for, but I think Manchester United are done. If I thought that the players had anything at all, I think that they could still actually have a go.

"They have still got to play Arsenal, they have still got to play Chelsea and they have still got to play Liverpool;
