Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville agree on why Manchester United made Erik ten Hag move

Jamie Carragher has agreed with his Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville on why Manchester United decided to appoint Erik ten Hag.

United have confirmed the current Ajax manager will replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis at the end of the season. The Dutchman has signed a deal with United until 2025 with the option of an additional year.

Speaking about Ten Hag's appointment at Old Trafford, Neville told Sky Sports: "Ultimately, Pochettino has been the outstanding choice for a number of years but I think losing in the Champions League this season and not winning the league last year in France [is the reason why United chose Ten Hag].

"I remember being at Manchester United when Sir Alex Ferguson was the manager and all the way through that period there would be talk of 'if Sir Alex Ferguson hangs up his boots next year it'll be... Steve McClaren, Sven-Goran Eriksson'. There was always these sorts of feelings of who is the man of the moment and Erik ten Hag is the man of the moment.

"The overwhelming choice of the fans as well and they have spoken to Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag and the club have determined that Erik ten Hag is the right man to take the club forward." When asked whether he thought Ten Hag was the right man for the job, Carragher agreed with Neville.

He told Sky Sports in a Q&A: "I think he is, he's the guy I'd have gone for. I know it was a toss-up between him and Mauricio Pochettino, I just feel the job he's done at Ajax, and Pochettino, who I'm a huge fan of, has gone to PSG and it hasn't quite worked out.
