Gary Neville clashes with pundit over Antonio Conte to Manchester United verdict

Gary Neville has doubled down on his opinion that Antonio Conte was not the right fit for Manchester United.

Following a dismal season at Old Trafford, United are preparing for a fresh start when new manager Erik ten Hag steps into the dugout after watching a final day defeat to Crystal Palace from the stands. Having seen their title ambitions shattered by the November internationals, United slipped away from top-four contention and their long wait for silverware has yet again been extended.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given his marching orders shortly after Tottenham opted for a change in the dugout, with Conte being appointed and ultimately leading them to Champions League qualification. However, while the Italian has gone on to achieve what Ralf Rangnick failed to, that has not impacted how Neville feels.

He clashed with fellow Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp on the final day as Tottenham sealed their top-four finish with a 5-0 demolition vs Norwich. United were, meanwhile, sentenced to a 12th defeat of what has been a simply disastrous season.

Redknapp said: "The club have to do everything within their power to back him, to make sure next year he has got everything he needs because he's an elite manager. I think Gary [Neville] was wearing those glasses when he said Man United shouldn't get him as their coach because, when you look at him now, surely you must realise he would have been good for Manchester United?"

Neville replied: "It is possible to think that he's a great coach, but he doesn't suit your club and that's it. For me, he does two years at clubs and I don't think he's right for Manchester United. But for other clubs, fine.
