Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher agree on Man City penalty decision vs Manchester United

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both think the penalty Manchester City were awarded for a foul on Rodri by Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund was harsh.

United started the derby strongly but City were soon able to find their feet at Old Trafford. The crucial talking point in the half came on 26 minutes when the Blues were awarded a penalty.

As a free kick was swung into the box, Hojlund appeared to haul Rodri to the ground. Referee Paul Tierney let play continue but was called to the monitor by Michael Oliver and then chose to overturn his on-field decision and give the spot kick.

Neville thought the decision was a bit harsh on United. "I’ve looked at it four or five times and in slow motion, it looks like a no-brainer that it’s a penalty," the former captain told Sky Sports.

"In real-time, he gets around him then lets go of Rodri and he throws himself to the ground like most players would. Personally, I think it’s a little bit soft and he is not going to get away with it, Hojlund. He has lost his man, he has wrapped his arm around him and he’s going to pay for it."

Erling Haaland dispatched the penalty to give City the advantage at half-time. In the studio, former Liverpool centre-back Carragher analysed the decision and he agreed that it was soft.

"I think it’s a little bit harsh," Carragher explained. "I’m not saying it’s not a foul, but this happens constantly, virtually every game you see and you don’t see penalties given for it.

"I feel a bit for Manchester United because every team could show an incident like this that they feel like they should have had a penalty. He (Hojlund) lost him, he panics, and the left arm
