Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher agree on Erik ten Hag impact at Manchester United

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher often clash in the commentary box and Sky Sports studio and that makes for box office viewing. However, for once, they seemingly agreed over Erik ten Hag and the impact he has made already as Manchester United manager.

Following a truly dismal season at Old Trafford and beyond, Ten Hag was brought in from Ajax after guiding the Dutch side to three Eredivisie titles in four and a half years. But will the Dutchman be the man to rekindle past glories for United?

As part of a wider shake-up behind the scenes, United have sanctioned swoops for Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez during the summer. However, there have been early issues for Ten Hag to contend with, too, including wantaway Cristiano Ronaldo and a long-winded pursuit for Frenkie de Jong.

Neville, speaking on the Overlap, in partnership with Sky Bet, said: "I would go back to Ten Hag and say I think he's had a really impressive start, a confident start, in spite of the fact his star player [Ronaldo] is playing up and has not been supported off the pitch by an operation that can get in the players he wants.

"I'd say that the manager has been given a pretty tough hand. All these clubs, Chelsea, they got Raheem Sterling in. City bring in Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez goes to Liverpool and then you've got Manchester United who, basically, can't get a player through the door."

Carragher added: "United are going into the season with a better manager than they started last season with [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] and the interim manager that came after him [Ralf Rangnick]. I think they have started in a better position in terms of in the dugout.
