Gary Lineker sends message to Jake Daniels as footballer comes out as gay

Former Leicester City striker Gary Lineker has sent a heartfelt message of support to young Blackpool forward Jake Daniels, who is the UK’s first active male professional footballer to come out as gay.

Daniels came out in an emotional statement this afternoon (Monday) and has received praise and support from across the footballing world. Lineker joined Leicester City and numerous other football clubs, players, pundits and supporters in congratulating the young man on a brave step.

The Blackpool forward, who has scored 30 goals for their under-18s this season and is on the fringes of the first team, is the first British male professional to come out since Justin Fashanu in 1990.

Tweeting to his 8.4 million followers, Lineker wrote: "Well played, Jake Daniels. It’s been a brilliant season for you on the pitch, and now through your bravery, off the pitch too. I’m sure you’ll receive huge love and support from the football community and many others will follow your path. Good luck to you."

Leicester City retweeted the striker's statement with the message: "You're an inspiration to us all, Jake" and a blue heart emoji.
