Gary Lineker makes trademark joke in last ever BBC Match of the Day introduction

Gary Lineker quipped 'it wasn't meant to end this way' as he introduced his final Match of the Day show. The ex-England forward hosted for the last time on the BBC's Premier League highlights programme on Sunday.

The broadcaster had previously revealed Lineker's departure in November, with his contract due to run out. It was acknowledged that this campaign would be his swansong, though he was set to lead the BBC's coverage for the forthcoming FA Cup and next year's World Cup.

However, his departure was hastened due to a controversy surrounding a tweet that was criticised as anti-Semitic. Consequently, Lineker presented Match of the Day for one last occasion on Sunday evening.

During the initial moments of his final episode, which kicked off with a compilation of his memorable moments, Lineker remarked: "It wasn't meant to end this way but with the title race over and the relegation places left confirmed, the Champions League was all we had left to talk about. I'm delighted to say joining us for this one, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards."

Lineker has spoken out since news of his early exit emerged, taking to social media to comment on his departure. In a statement released after the announcement, Lineker reflected: "Football has been at the heart of my life for as long as I can remember - both on the pitch and in the studio.

"I care deeply about the game, and about the work I've done with the BBC over many years. As I've said, I would never consciously repost anything antisemitic - it goes against everything I stand for.

"However, I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am. Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action."
