Gary Lineker has been proved right with huge Wolves prediction

Wolverhampton Wanderers were tipped by many to struggle at the start of this season.

Lots of pundits and fans of Premier League clubs couldn’t see beyond the team’s dire end to the 2020/21 season. The decision to replace revered head coach Nuno Espirito Santo with Bruno Lage - who only had 18 months previous experience as a first team manager on his CV - prompted cause for concern.

Wolves’ three successive defeats at the beginning of the Premier League season raised further questions. On August 29, as Wolves sat in the relegation zone after three 1-0 losses to Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, the armchair experts were feeling vindicated in their predictions.

One pundit who didn’t form an opinion without watching Wolves’ opening three games was Match of the Day host Gary Lineker. Like all of us who watched Wolves dominate Leicester, Spurs and United without taking a single point, Lineker knew it would only be a matter of time before Lage’s team turned performances into results.

Shortly after the defeat to United at the end of August, Lineker tweeted: “Watched all three of Wolves’ games and even though they’ve lost them all 1-0, I reckon they’ll be fine and have a decent season. Played well each time, they just need a change of fortune.”

That change of fortune swiftly arrived with a 2-0 win at Watford in early September kickstarting a run of five wins from seven matches. There have been a few blips since, such as the run of four games without a goal before Christmas and three defeats on the spin to Arsenal, West Ham and Crystal Palace more recently.
