Gary Bowyer leaves Dundee after crunch talks as John Nelms reveals decision taken in two-sentence statement

Dundee have parted ways with manager Gary Bowyer just days after winning the Scottish Championship title.

Bowyer replaced Mark McGhee last June in the hope of guiding the Dens Park club back into the top-flight at first time of asking following relegation. And he achieved that feat during a pulsating 5-3 victory over Queen’s Park on Friday. Despite that, the former Blackburn Rovers boss is moving back to England in order to take on the reins at Blackpool after crunch talks with sporting director Gordon Strachan. Recently axed St Johnstone gaffer Callum Davidson is the favourite to replace him.

A statement from managing director John Nelms read: "Given the importance of the weeks and months ahead, I felt it was necessary to ensure we are all aligned on the direction needed to ensure the club is ready for its return to the Premiership. On behalf of everyone at the club, not least our fans, we wish Gary the best for the future and reiterate our thanks for his achievements in the past year.”

Bowyer will leave the club alongside assistant Billy Barr. Strachan will undertake a recruitment process to appoint a new manager ahead of the new league campaign.
