Galway see off wasteful Cork to book semi-final spot
Galway have advanced to the All-Ireland hurling semi-finals after a 2-19 to 1-21 victory over Cork at Semple Stadium.
The Tribesmen led their quarter-final at Thurles 2-06 to 0-07 at the break and made the ideal start when they raised a green flag in the very first attack of the game when Cork goalkeeper Patrick Collins misjudged Jack Grealish's long-distance strike.
Conor Whelan added a second in the 18th minute with a clinical finish, but the Rebels were guilty of some very poor shooting in the opening 35 minutes, coughing up three goal chances and hitting a dozen wides.
The Rebels, who introduced Patrick Horgan for the second-half, made a flying start upon the resumption when Shane Kingston pounced and finished smartly to the back of the net.
A brilliant sideline cut from Cork captain Mark Coleman made it a three-point game with 20 minutes remaining.
Darragh Fitzgibbon's point in the fourth of five minutes of injury time reduced the gap to the bare minimum, but that proved to be the final score of the game with the Tribesmen sealing their place in the last four.
