Galway puzzle continues to mystify, says Shane McGrath

The Galway hurlers may require a little more introspection if they are to make a mark in this year's championship, according to former Tipperary player Shane McGrath.

The Tribesmen are on one win from three after last weekend’s defeat to Wexford. Indeed they could be in an even greater predicament were it not for Conor Whelan’s last-gasp equaliser against Kilkenny in round two.

Their Leinster destiny remains in their own hands with games against Antrim and Dublin to follow, but speaking on the RTÉ GAA podcast, McGrath says he is at a loss to explain their inconsistency given the depth of talent at Henry Shefflin’s disposal.

Even the addition of former Tipp manager and coach Eamon O’Shea hasn’t had an immediate upswing in performance.

"I’d know Eamon, he’d have coached me," he said. "He’d be about hitting space, hurling off the cuff.

"For Henry’s career, he hurled with freedom, he hurled as he saw in front of him. They have inherited a group of players with so much potential, talent and skill, but they just can’t seem to win when it matters most.

"I don’t know what Micheál Donoghue did so wrong that he wasn’t left on as Galway manager. Whatever he was doing, he knew the players so well. He got the very best out of them, they reached the pinnacle. Even in 2018, with some injuries, they reached an All-Ireland final.
