'Frustrated' - Manchester United dealt major injury blow

Mason Mount is expected to miss a few weeks of action after scans confirmed he had picked up a muscle injury during Manchester United's Premier League defeat to Brighton.

Mount went off at half-time at the Amex Stadium after feeling a problem during the first half, with United going on to lose the game 2-1. That was a blow for the £55m midfielder, who enjoyed an injury-free pre-season and had started all three competitive games at the start of the new campaign. He was particularly impressive in the first 45 minutes at Brighton before being forced off.

Mount will now miss Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford, before a two-week pause for the September international break. United return with back-to-back away games at Southampton and Crystal Palace and also start their Europa League campaign that week.

Posting on social media, Mount said: “During the last game I picked up a minor muscle issue. I've had it checked and it looks like I'll be out for a few games. Leading up to and during pre-season, I worked hard to get my fitness back to where it needs to be and I felt re-energised, sharp and ready.

“I wanted you to hear it directly from me how frustrated I am, as I expect you are too. I will do everything possible to be back in the best shape and help the team.”

Mount's first season at Old Trafford was wrecked by injury and he started just five Premier League fixtures. In total he missed 27 fixtures due to two separate issues, including a calf problem that sidelined him from November until March.
