From an African visit to cruising the Mediterranean: How F1 drivers are taking time off

Formula 1 is currently enjoying a well-deserved break after 13 excruciating races. Now in the annual August break, in the European summer, drivers are taking time off to recoup and recharge their batteries.

But just what did they get up to?

Well, not all the drivers shared their experiences on social media, but those who did gave us a glimpse into just what they do to unwind and distance themselves from F1.

From visiting the African continent to vlogging about the Monacan lifestyle, here's what some of your favourite racers got up to.

Lewis Hamilton

The seven-time champion had quite a holiday - and it's still ongoing! Right after the Hungarian Grand Prix, the 13th race in the 2022 season and the one preceding the summer break, the Mercedes-AMG star spent time with 2021 MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo. The Monster Energy Yamaha rider visited the Mercedes camp in Hungary, whereafter the two athletes hit the water.

Hamilton said on his Instagram: "Kicked off the summer break with a much needed day out on the water. Fabio Quartararo, always a pleasure. Some amazing weeks ahead for sure."

But Hamilton did not spend his entire summer in Europe. The F1 ace headed to Namibia for several days, citing that he is finally "doing something I've wanted to do for years. I'm finally tracing my roots through Africa."

While in our neighbouring country, Hamilton experienced the wildlife and said he felt re-centred and at peace. The British star has consistently advocated for F1 to return to Africa, and it is probable that a South African visit, most notably the Kyalami Circuit, could be on the cards...
