Free bar and impromptu fashion show raises spirits after romantic getaway turns into nightmare for couple caught up in horrendous weather

A couple whose holiday was blighted by heavy rain and flooding told how they were cheered up by free drinks and a catwalk show on the flight back. James Billington, 24, and Georgia Jackson, 23, from Manchester, were caught up in horrendous weather during a romantic getaway to the Greek Island of Skiathos.

Torrential rain and storms battered the island and caused flooding on the streets and at their hotel. Cars were washed away and holidaymakers were told to stay inside for days to stay safe, the Mirror reports.

James, an engineer, and Georgia, a speech and language therapy student, had been due to return home on Tuesday but their flight back with TUI was delayed for more than 40 hours due to the weather conditions. When they were eventually flown home, a free bar was laid on and one passenger even organised an impromptu fashion show to raise spirits.

James said: "It rained for 36 hours straight and wasn’t supposed to stop till Thursday." As the weather worsened over Monday night and into Tuesday, James recalled seeing flood water pouring into the hotel as the road outside turned into a river.

“It didn’t stop. I didn’t sleep the Monday night going into Tuesday,” James said. “And around 8am we had breakfast and it was flowing fast like a stream down the middle of our hotel road. We went for a kip around 2pm just for an hour and that's when it got worse and started flooding the hotel.”
