Frederic Guilbert is showing Steven Gerrard exactly what he's looking for at Aston Villa

It was a case of another 1-0 win, another clean sheet and another man-of-the-match performance for Aston Villa's loan ranger Frederic Guilbert who's once again alongside the likes of Lionel Messi in Ligue 1's team of the week.

Guilbert's loan club Strasbourg are in the dizzy heights of fourth-place in the French top flight - just months after a relegation battle which saw them survive the drop by two points last term.

"If we're here, it's because we deserve it," Guilbert told reporters after Strasbourg's 1-0 win over Angers on Sunday. "We are not going to apologise for being in this position (4th). We are going to aim for the top 10, for the moment."

Guilbert's form has him alongside the likes of PSG superstar Achraf Hakimi (46 tackles) in terms of his defensive contribution (43 tackles), with the right-back winning an impressive 78 of his one-vs-ones against his opposition wingers at a ratio of four per match.

However, it's the Villa man's offensive displays that has really caught the eye in France knowing he's level with Neymar for chances created (5) with the pair both on three assists for the season.

What'll be music to Villa fans' ears, though, will be the fact that only four players have attempted more crosses than Guilbert (129) in Ligue 1. The right-back is averaging 6.45 deliveries into the box per game and is way ahead of those you expect to see whipping balls into the danger area such as Angel Di Maria (92). Just seven players have completed more crosses than Guilbert (36) as well.
