Frank McAvennie says ‘brilliant’ Calvert-Lewis should join Newcastle over Arsenal

Newcastle United are expected to sign a new striker this summer as Dwight Gayle is surplus to requirements while Chris Wood has struggled for goals. The Magpies are likely to be linked with a host of players across all continents, but Eddie Howe does appear to have his eye on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Newcastle are believed to have made contact over a deal for the 25-year-old, but it remains to be seen where he ends up this summer. Calvert-Lewin is contracted with Everton until 2025 and has interest from Arsenal, so there’s no guarantee Howe will get his man.

Everton are 18th in the Premier League with five games remaining, however, so it’s hard to see the England international staying at Goodison Park if they were relegated. Frank McAvennie says Calvert-Lewin would be foolish to choose Arsenal over Newcastle anyway, as they have a bigger ceiling.

He told Football Insider: “I’m not sure why you would go to Arsenal instead of Newcastle. They won’t be far off each other soon and only one of those clubs is on the up in my opinion. I think he’s having a stinker if he goes to Arsenal, he has had such a bad season as well.

“So he needs to prove his fitness before thinking about moving on. I think him leaving is nailed on. He’s brilliant on his day but he hasn’t had the chance to show it this season.”

Calvert-Lewin joined Everton from Sheffield United in 2016 and has gone on to make 187 appearances in all competitions, scoring 56 goals with 17 assists.

The 25-year-old has scored only three goals in 13 Premier League appearances this season due to injury, however. Calvert-Lewin hasn’t found the back of the net since August either, so might there be better options out there for Newcastle?
