Frank Lampard sees Rangers manager credentials clamped as lack of 'better options' leaves pundit shocked

Frank Lampard emerging as a strong Rangers manager candidate has sparked surprise - as one pundit thought there would be more favourable options.

The Light Blues are on the hunt for their next boss after sacking Michael Beale last weekend off the back of a 3-1 loss to Aberdeen on Premiership business. Further misery was piled on them in Steven Davis' first game as interim gaffer when losing 2-1 to Cypriot champions Aris Limassol in a humbling Europa League defeat prior to a tricky away test at St Mirren on Sunday.

Plenty of names have been mentioned with the vacancy, including former player and current Yokohama f. Marinos boss Kevin Muscat. But Record Sport has revealed on Thursday night that a Rangers delegation has met with the Chelsea legend in London to talk over the vacancy, with Lampard having managed down south with Derby, the Stamford Bridge club and most recently at Everton on a permanent basis alongside a caretaker role in West London.

Others have been touted but it's Lampard's name who has been high on the bookies agenda. And when former England striker Darren Bent was asked about the 45-year-old being a leading name at Rangers, there was some shock.

He told talkSPORT: "I'm surprised. I thought there were better options out there, but depends on who wants the job.

"I can't understand why Graham Potter is not being (considered). That's the one if I'm Rangers, I'm trying to get him."
